The story of this book goes back to 1983 when one of us (Jan Lundius) was teaching history of religions at Universidad Católica de Santo Domingo. He then found out that the father of one of his students, Emigdio Garrido Puello, had written a biography of a mysterious ‘messiah’, Olivorio Mateo, who in the 1920s had been active in a valley close to the Haitian border. The story of Olivorio sounded like a medieval tale, but the events had taken place during the present century, and the cult was still active.
